غابة صينية

Photo : If one tree plus another is a wood, add another and you have a forest!

This character can be used to refer to forests, but it can also refer to the dark atmosphere caused by being in a forest (the big dark forest). This characters meaning has since been extended to also mean ‘dark’ and ‘fearful’. That makes it sound slightly ominous but forests have been sources of great fear for a large part of human history, think how many stories warn children of the dangers of the forest and what lies within: Hansel & Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and The Black Forest.

Sadly, there are still forests in this world, which are sad and fearful places. In Japan there is a forest called Aokigahara that is known for being the most popular suicide location in Japan (78 in 2002). The forest has a historic association with demons and dark spirits in Japanese mythology, but it is still tragic.
